Several district heating utilities have signed multi-year offtake agreements for waste heat from immersion-cooled mining facilities, moving arrangements that began as pilots onto commercial footing.
Immersion cooling produces water at a temperature usable by heat pumps, which is what makes the arrangement viable where air-cooled sites cannot compete.
Utilities value the load's flexibility less than its predictability, and contracts typically require a minimum thermal delivery regardless of mining economics.
That obligation cuts both ways: operators lose some freedom to curtail during price spikes, which reduces the value of demand-response participation.
Developers say the model only works where a heat network already exists nearby, limiting replication to a handful of regions.
